The Hebrew University of Jerusalem

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI), Israel’s first and largest university, is a multidisciplinary institution of higher learning and research, where intellectual pioneering, cutting-edge scientific discoveries, and a passion for learning flourishes. For the past 80 years, HUJI researchers have not only carried out outstanding basic research, but have also responded to the needs of the society.

Prof. Dani Zamir is a professor of Genetics and plant breeding at the Faculty of Agriculture and will lead the HUJI group. He has over 35 years of research experience focusing on the use of biodiversity resources for crop improvement with a major focus on tomato. In 2004, Prof. Zamir started to coordinate and co-chair the International Solanaceae Genome Project (SOL) resulting in the publication of the description of the tomato genome in 2010.

Within TRADITOM, the HUJI group will contribute its expertise in developing multiple breeding materials, genetic and genomic information, high density SNP&QTL maps, ILs and RIs and a saturated mutant library. During the EU-SOL project the group has evaluated 7,000 tomato accessions according to a descriptor catalogue that will also be used in TRADITOM.
