The research group “Agrodiversity and Plant Breeding” at the Miguel Hernández University has been working for almost 20 years in the conservation of traditional varieties of tomato and in the development of new restraint varieties. Unique material obtained by the group over many years consists of traditional varieties carrying resistance genes and will be used within TRADITOM.

The work conducted by the TRADITOM partners will be complemented by research activities at the Faculty of Agriculture of Tuscia University (Viterbo) to increase the breadth and validity of the approach with additional accessions and expertise. The group of Prof. Andrea Mazzucato has a seed collection of tomato local ecotypes and traditional varieties as well as long standing expertise in their phenotyping.

Consiglio per la Ricerca e la Sperimentazione in Agricoltura (CRA-NUT)
The Agricultural Research Council is a national research organization under the aegis of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policy with general scientific competence in the fields of agriculture, agroindustry, food, fishery and forestry. The Research Center on Food and NUTrition (CRA-NUT) carries out basic and applied research in food science and human nutrition. In particular, CRA-NUT will share its expertise in sensory research related to food and in understanding the consumer’s eating experience, motivations and choices to support the TRADITOM project.

Fundació Miquel Agustí
The Miquel Agustí Foundation is a centre related to the technical university Barcelonatech and devoted to breeding heirlooms for sensory traits. The foundation’s expertise lies in vegetal breeding, sensory analysis, vegetables management and chimiometry related to sensory evaluation. The foundation works together with farmer’s associations to improve traditional landraces and promote geographic labels. Within TRADITOM, expertise will be shared in breeding for sensory traits in tomato heirlooms and to have the opportunity to generate and process a big amount of complementary information on tomato heirlooms.

Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria
The Department of Agriculture at the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria is interested in the research fields agricultural chemistry, agronomy crops and grasses, plant genetics and biotechnology. The areas of expertise range from sustainable management of crop systems to plant breeding, molecular biology, plant physiology and crop yields. The plant genetics research activities are focused on developing strategies and biotechnology methodologies to improve agricultural and crop yields. To support TRADITOM, materials and expertise in sustainable agriculture will be contributed.

Alícia Foundation
The Alícia Foundation is a centre with a social vocation, devoted to technological innovation in cuisine, the improvement of eating habits and the evaluation of the food heritage. Alícia works with renowned chefs and scientists from around the world, related to health, good eating habits and high sensory quality food. Together with the TRADITOM consortium, the foundation considers knowledge on heirlooms basic to develop and promote more attractive and nutritious foods. In particular, the Alícia foundation will support dissemination activities of TRADITOM by organizing workshops.

el3ments
el3ments is an initiative supported by the EU aiming to recover land for sustainable agriculture, optimization of water and energy resources through different educational and development projects. The founder of el3ments, Hector Molina, is member of the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA) and represents young farmers that are using marginal land to grow specialty vegetables for the local restaurants and other initiatives. El3ments will support TRADITOM by participating in testing some selected materials and in the dissemination of project’s results.

Cooperativa Conca de la Tordera
The Cooperativa Conca de la Tordera resulted from the fusion of the “Cooperativa dels Pagesos de Palafolls” and the “Cooperativa Agrícola de Blanes”, dating back to the last century. At present, it is a leading company specialized in the production, packaging and distribution of vegetables. Together with the TRADITOM consortium, the cooperative considers that increased information on management and genetic characteristics of the Penjar tomato will enhance the obtainment of new improved varieties, helping to consolidate the product in their market. In particular, plant materials of the project will be cultivated under commercial production conditions at the cooperative. Furthermore, contributions to the characterization for agronomic traits and the provision of fruits for sensory, chemical and genetic evaluation are foreseen within the TRADITOM project.

Cooperativa Valenciana Unió Protectora d’El Perelló
The Cooperativa Valenciana Unió Protectora d’El Perelló is a cooperative of professional farmers. One of the cooperative’s specializations is the cultivation and marketing of the Valenciano traditional variety of tomato, for which they are the leading cooperative in Valencia. As part of the support for the TRADITOM project, the cooperative will cultivate plant materials of the project under commercial production conditions and will contribute to the characterization for agronomic traits and by providing fruits for further evaluation under the TRADITOM project.

Cooperativa El Progrés-Garbí
The origin of the Cooperativa El Progrés-Garbí goes back to 1915, when a group of professional farmers joined to work together in north Barcelona area. At present, they are a leading company in fresh marketing of vegetable, supplying both Spanish and European countries. Among the products, traditional tomato varieties have a major importance. The participation in TRADITOM will help to provide knowledge and technology to improve the heirlooms that are produced. As part of the support for the TRADITOM project, the cooperative will cultivate plant materials of the project under commercial production conditions of the area and will contribute to the characterization for agronomic traits and by providing fruits for further evaluation under the TRADITOM project.

Union of Santorini Cooperatives
The Union of Santorini Cooperatives was founded in 1947 with 2500 members that equals the total number of producers from the island, while 1000 of them are active. Today, it cultivates the traditional tomato Santorini variety. Santorini tomato has gained the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) certification according to EU regulation. Santorini tomato has completed the Santorini PDO products trilogy along with Santorini Assyrtiko, wine variety and Santorini Fava. The cooperative is the biggest wine producer of the island. As part of the support for the TRADITOM project, the union will grow different tomato varieties in their facilities and make agronomic assessment for targeted experiments.

The Consorzio di Tutela IGP Pomodoro di Pachino was founded with the idea of promoting and enhancing the Pachino cherry tomato, safeguarding the typicality and controlling for proper use of the product name. The cooperative is located in south Eastern Sicily and has a long experience in growing and commercialization of the Pachino tomato.
