Workshop on traditional tomatoes at the Premiere of the Muchamiel Tomato Fair

Muchamiel/ Spain, October 27-28, 2017

The first Muchamiel Tomato Fair will take place from October 27-28, 2017 in the Spanish town of Muchamiel near Alicante.

As part of the 2-day event, a workshop on the traditional Muchamiel tomato will be held on October 27, 2017. The workshop is organized by Juan Jo Ruiz and Santi Martinez-García from TRADITOM associated partner Miguel Hernández University (UMH) and will feature the participation of several TRADITOM members (see programme below).

Project coordinator Antonio Granell (CSIC) will present what we know about Muchamiel tomatoes from work done in the frame of the TRADITOM project. In particular, he will address how this tomato type compares with other traditional tomatoes in Europe at genotypic and phenotypic levels. Santiago García-Martinez will present the EPSO-UMH breeding program that aims to improve the Muchamiel tomato.

The workshop is part of the Feria del Tomate Muchamiel organized by the municipality of Muchamiel to recognize the value of this variety named after its hometown. The celebrations will include a farmers market, taste booths, showcooking based on Muchamiel tomatoes by well-reputed chefs from restaurants “Tapes de Laia” and “L’escaleta” (Kiko Moya), a cooking workshop for children, tomato taste workshops, and other hands-on activities.

While the first day of the fair is aimed particularly at professionals in the sector - such as producers, traders or researchers - the second day offers activities for everyone interested in this delicious vegetable product.
