The research group “Agrodiversity and Plant Breeding” at the Miguel Hernández University has been working for almost 20 years in the conservation of traditional varieties of tomato and in the development of new restraint varieties. Unique material obtained by the group over many years consists of traditional varieties carrying resistance genes and will be used within TRADITOM.
The ambition of TRADITOM is to join forces between scientists and farmers in the frame of a multidisciplinary, multi-actor and pan-European project. To complement the knowledge and expertise of the consortium, this project involves a number of associated partners.

The Research Center on Food and NUTrition (CRA-NUT) carries out basic and applied research in food science and human nutrition. In particular, CRA-NUT will share its expertise in sensory research related to food and in understanding the consumer’s eating experience, motivations and choices to support the TRADITOM project.
Fundació Miquel Agustí
The Miquel Agustí Foundation is a centre related to the technical university Barcelonatech and devoted to breeding heirlooms for sensory traits. The foundation’s expertise lies in vegetal breeding, sensory analysis, vegetables management and chimiometry related to sensory evaluation. The foundation works together with farmer’s associations to improve traditional landraces and promote geographic labels. Within TRADITOM, expertise will be shared in breeding for sensory traits in tomato heirlooms and to have the opportunity to generate and process a big amount of complementary information on tomato heirlooms.
Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria
The Department of Agriculture at the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria is interested in the research fields agricultural chemistry, agronomy crops and grasses, plant genetics and biotechnology. The areas of expertise range from sustainable management of crop systems to plant breeding, molecular biology, plant physiology and crop yields. The plant genetics research activities are focused on developing strategies and biotechnology methodologies to improve agricultural and crop yields. To support TRADITOM, materials and expertise in sustainable agriculture will be contributed.
The Alícia Foundation is a centre with a social vocation, devoted to technological innovation in cuisine, the improvement of eating habits and the evaluation of the food heritage.
